In a significant push for modern, sustainable urban transport, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to introduce electric trams across Islamabad. The initiative aligns with government efforts to modernize infrastructure and reduce carbon emissions.
ποΈ Project Details & Routes
Following a high-level meeting between CDA officials and the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa confirmed that a feasibility study will be conducted for the new tram system.
βElectric buses are already running, and now weβre exploring the introduction of electric trams,β Randhawa told local media.
βWe agreed to move forward with a feasibility study.β
The proposed tram lines aim to cover Islamabadβs busiest corridors. The initial four routes under consideration include:
- Rawat to Faisal Mosque via the Expressway
- Jinnah Square to Islamabad International Airport along Srinagar Highway
- (Two additional routes are under internal review and expected to be disclosed in the final study)
A Chinese consultancy firm is likely to be hired to conduct the study and prepare implementation plans.
π Soft Wheel Electric Trams & Network Integration
The tram system will feature soft wheel electric trams, a quieter and more adaptable alternative to traditional rail-based systems. The plan also includes expanding the electric feeder bus network, which is already in operation in the capital.
Officials have emphasized the importance of integration, efficiency, and environmental sustainability as core pillars of the new public transport strategy.
π¦ Past vs. Present: This Time It’s Different?
Islamabad has previously flirted with Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems, including a proposed project with China Railway, but none came to fruition. However, this time, CDA officials say they are determined to move forward.
The Prime Minister and Interior Minister have issued clear directives, and the current administration is framing this as a priority infrastructure initiative.
β»οΈ A Greener, Smarter Capital
This electric tram project builds on Islamabadβs transition toward eco-friendly mobility. With electric buses already operational, the city hopes trams will further cut congestion and pollution while offering commuters a reliable, modern alternative.
