In a major upgrade to email productivity, Google has started rolling out a new Gemini AI-powered feature in Gmail that automatically summarizes lengthy or complex email threads — no clicks required.
This enhancement is set to revolutionize how users manage long conversations, offering instant, AI-generated insights right at the top of applicable emails.
✨ What’s New: Auto-Summary by Default
Previously, Gmail users had to manually tap “Summarize this email” to access a condensed version of an email thread. With this update:
- Gemini AI now auto-displays summaries at the top of the email
- Triggered for long threads or multi-reply conversations
- Available for English-language emails only, for now
🔄 Real-Time Updates with Every New Reply
Gemini doesn’t just stop at summarizing the email once — it continuously refreshes the summary as new replies are added. This ensures the displayed summary always reflects the latest developments in the conversation, saving you time and reducing scroll fatigue.
👥 Who Can Use It?
The automatic summarization feature is gradually rolling out over up to 15 days, and access is currently limited to:
- Google Workspace subscribers
- Google One AI Premium plan users
- Customers with Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium plans
Even if your email doesn’t get auto-summarized, you can still manually trigger the summary using the familiar “Summarize this email” chip at the top.
🧠 Why It Matters
This update marks another step toward making Gmail smarter and more context-aware. With AI summarization now built in, users can quickly scan complex discussions, extract key points, and stay productive — especially in fast-moving professional environments.
Stay tuned as Gemini AI continues to expand its role across Google’s productivity suite. More intelligent features are likely on the way!
