The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has officially announced a 100% increase in ticket prices for all metro feeder and electric bus services in Islamabad, effective June 1, 2025.

New Fare: Rs. 100 (Flat Rate)

  • Previous Fare: Rs. 50
  • New Fare: Rs. 100
  • Applies to: Orange Line, Green Line, Blue Line, and all electric buses
  • Coverage: All 17 citywide routes

Impact on Daily Commuters

With nearly 90,000 daily riders, this hike will directly affect:

  • Students
  • Daily wage workers
  • Office employees
  • Low-income families

Public transport has been a cost-effective mode of travel for thousands in Islamabad, making this fare revision a major shift in affordability.

Why the Fare Hike?

According to CDA officials:

  • The government subsidy for operational costs has been reduced from 50% to 30%
  • CDA will still bear a subsidy of Rs. 1.5 to 1.75 billion annually, down from Rs. 3.5 billion

This financial cutback prompted the fare revision to maintain service sustainability.

Previous Fare Hike Was Delayed

  • A similar fare increase was planned for May 26, 2025
  • However, it was withdrawn after public backlash
  • The revised fare structure is now final and being implemented without rollback

What This Means

This fare hike may lead to:

  • Reduced accessibility to public transport for lower-income groups
  • Increased burden on Islamabad's already limited transportation alternatives
  • Renewed calls for policy review and transport subsidies
